A Las Vegas jury found Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder on Monday in the 1996 shooting of Tupac Shakur. He is the only person ever charged in the case, which went unsolved for nearly 30 years.

Davis, 63, showed no reaction as the verdict was read. He raised a fist toward the gallery on his way out. The courtroom was full, with relatives of both Shakur and Davis there. Jurors took only a few hours after closing arguments. The conviction includes enhancements for use of a deadly weapon and for acting to benefit a criminal gang.

Prosecutors never claimed Davis fired the shots. They argued he set up the drive-by. Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal said Davis got a gun and “went hunting” for Shakur and Death Row co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight after Davis’s nephew was beaten earlier that night, September 7, 1996\. Shakur was shot from a white Cadillac and died six days later.

Most of the case rested on things Davis said himself. He had put himself in that Cadillac repeatedly over the years — to police, on television, and in his 2019 book *Compton Street Legend*, which opens with his account of going after Shakur and Knight.

Davis’s lawyers said he made it all up to sell books. Since his arrest he has called the admissions false and blamed his co-author for putting them in. His defense also raised police corruption, bad legal advice he got years ago, and the lack of physical evidence putting him in Las Vegas that night.

Davis was arrested in 2023 outside a house in Henderson, Nevada. Shakur was 25 when he died.
