# South Korea’s New Attack Drone Crashed Twice in Seconds. Here’s What That Reveals About the Race With North Korea

Two prototypes of South Korea’s newest attack drone crashed into the sea off Busan within seconds of launch on August 25 — the drone’s first-ever test from a ship, and its first real failure after roughly 30 clean land-based tests.

The drone is the K-LUCAS, a loitering munition built by South Korea’s Agency for Defense Development (ADD). It has a three-meter wingspan, more than 10 hours of endurance, and is designed to do reconnaissance, surveillance, and strike missions from a single airframe.

The test was launched from the ROKS Marado, a Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship. The first drone crashed about two seconds after leaving its launch tube. A second drone, fired shortly after, went down around four seconds in.

## **What actually went wrong**

The cause wasn’t aerodynamics or software — it was a hatch. Investigators found that a door on a lower launch tube was slightly out of alignment. When a drone fired from the tube above it, the force of that launch pushed the misaligned door inward, which threw the departing drone off before it could stabilize.

## **Why the timing matters**

North Korea has been rapidly scaling up its own drone production, including suicide/kamikaze-style drones, and South Korea has been explicit that the K-LUCAS program exists to close that gap. Seoul’s plan is to field more than 20,000 low-cost drones by 2030, alongside AI-enabled drone swarms — a volume-based strategy that treats drones as attritable, mass-producible weapons rather than expensive one-off assets.
