Canadian wildfire smoke pushes New York air quality to ‘very unhealthy’ levels

U.S. News By Max Hadley July 16, 2026 · 23:26 UTCUpdated 16 days ago ← Back to Home

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has drifted into the northeastern United States, driving air quality in New York into the “very unhealthy” category — worse than typical readings in India‘a capital Delhi.

The haze has reduced visibility and triggered air quality alerts across much of the state, with fine particulate pollution reaching hazardous levels in affected areas.

Health officials are advising residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues, to limit time outdoors.

Similar conditions are affecting other parts of the Northeast and Midwest, with alerts in place across multiple states.
