The attack unfolded near West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue, where police said a woman they described as emotionally disturbed began stabbing people. Responding officers opened fire, striking her. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition. At least two stabbing victims were also hospitalized; their conditions were not immediately clear, and early accounts varied on the severity of the injuries.

Police said the attack did not appear to be terror-related. The NYPD urged people to avoid the area around West 43rd Street and Seventh Avenue and warned of delays nearby as the investigation got underway.

The shooting happened in the middle of a district packed with tourists, theaters and heavy police presence, and video circulating online appeared to capture the moment officers fired as bystanders scattered.
