Guyana ferry death toll rises to 41 as dozens remain missing

The death toll from a ferry that capsized off the coast of Guyana has risen to at least 41, authorities said Tuesday. The MV Barima was carrying 179 people from the capital Georgetown to the northwest village of Port Kaituma when it overturned late Saturday night.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips confirmed 41 bodies have been recovered. So far 77 people have been rescued, leaving dozens still missing. Search and rescue crews have multiple vessels deployed in the area, and the operation is ongoing.

Phillips said an investigation into the cause of the capsizing is underway, and that two crew members tested positive for marijuana following the incident.
