Iran has buried former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the holy city of Mashhad following a massive funeral procession.
Tens of thousands of mourners lined the streets as the procession made its way through the city, with many chanting slogans and carrying portraits of the late leader. Khamenei was laid to rest at the Imam Reza Shrine complex, one of Shia Islam’s holiest sites.

According to the Financial Times, the overall funeral events across multiple cities attracted a total of 12 to 15 million visitors, making it one of the largest funerals in modern history.
The burial marks the end of a period of national mourning that began after his death.
