A North Korean soldier crossed the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and defected to South Korea on Tuesday night, June 23, 2026.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the soldier was taken into custody in the central sector of the border after crossing the Military Demarcation Line. The soldier expressed a desire to defect and is currently being held by South Korean authorities.
The incident marks the second reported North Korean soldier defection and the fourth known defection case overall since President Lee Jae Myung took office in 2025. No gunfire or pursuit by North Korean forces was reported during the crossing.
Defections directly across the DMZ are extremely rare due to the area’s extensive security measures, including minefields, fences, and constant surveillance..
